THE ST.PETERSBURG STATE MUSEUM OF THEATRE AND MUSIC. The museum was opened in 1918 in the former administrative offices of the Imperial Theatres. The building is part of an important architectural ensemble on Ostrovsky Square (formerly Alexandrinsky Square), designed by Carlo Rossi and built between the late 1820s and early 1830s. Today the collection numbers about 450,000 items dedicated to the 250-year history of the Russian theatre. It is rich in costumes, stage and costume designs, and models for stage sets from the Russian Theatres. Sergei Diaghilev's Russian opera and ballet seasons in Paris in 1908–1911 are represented through drawings and watercolours by Leon Bakst, Alexander Benois, and many others. Post-revolutionary works by avant-garde artists include rare set and costume designs by Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin, and a recreation of an innovative stage set by Liubov Popova. The collection is further enriched by original prints, photographs, and some personal belongings of well-known actors, singers, and dancers, ranging from Anna Pavlova to Mikhail Baryshnikov. Labels in two languages are provided.
