SIEBENGEBIRGSMUSEUM

Since 18th / 19th century, the Seven Mountains on the border of the Rhine, near Bonn and Cologne, attract many visitors. This legendary setting, since the Age of Romanticism in the 19th century favoured by travellers from all over Europe, has remained one of the most popular stops for numerous visitors from all over the world.

In its permenent exhibition the museum surveys the eventful history of this region: landscape, ruins, Rhine-romanticism ... But there also is a display of other exhibits from the history of the castles and feudal lands, the monasteries, communities and important personages. In the centre of the attention there are ordinary people, theitr living and working conditions and also the changes in their habits. Local historical events and social development are explained in - and sametimes illustrate - the context of general evolution.

The exhibits originate from the collection of the "Heimatverein Siebengebirge" which set up a museum of local history in 1927. In 1934 the museum moved in its present site in a baroque house from the year 1732. Supported by the town of Königswinter many alterations and extensions have been carried out since about 1980, during which the collections were reorganized and presented under didactic aspects. In 1984 and 1994 the museums area was enlarged first by a new building and then extension on neighboured houses.
