ANTIKENMUSEUM DER UNIVERSITÄT LEIPZIG

The Museum of Antiquities of the University of Leipzig is not only one of the oldest collections of this kind in Central Europa but also one of the most important.
From a small number of objects to illustrate Greek and Roman times in the 18th century it developt during the 19th and 20th centurys from a cabinet of archaeology and art to a magnificant instrument for academic teaching which was used at the same time as a public museum.
The collection now with over 11000 objects offers a widespread view of Mediterranean cultures in Antiquity. There are objects in stone, bronze and clay from the Stone and Bronze age to the Iron age, from the beginnings of Greek civilisation to the climax in the Archaic to Hellenistic periods. Other pices illustrate Cypriote, Etruscan and Roman art. A special feature of the Leipzig collection are the finds from the Black Sea area and a collection of plaster casts.
The Exhibition in the rooms of the Old Nicolai School offers the visitor a selection of the most beautiful and interesting objects.
