Burg Altena, Germany

One of Arizona's most impressive art collections is found at the Fleischer Museum, which is located in an elegant, 15,000-square-foot facility. This beautiful museum features one of the most important private collections -"American Impressionism, California School." Inspired by California's diverse landscape, sunny days and the desire to paint en plein air, American impressionist artists of the California school gained respect and renown for their interpretation of the light and land in California from the turn of the century until the 1930s. Represented in the permanent collection are painters such as Franz Bischoff, Edgar Payne, Arthur Rider, Donna N. Schuster, William Wendt, Joseph Raphael and Guy Rose. While the focus of the Fleischer collection is on American Impressionism, the museum's perspective has broadened with the acquisition of Russian and Soviet Impressionism from the Cold War era. From the 1930s to the 1980s, the Soviets commissioned their preeminent artist to create on canvas the utopia they believed communism would achieve for the Soviet Union.
