BOTANICAL GARDEN KLAGENFURT

The Carinthian Botanical Center with the reginonal herbarium is located at the foot of the Kreuzbergl hill in the historic quarry of Klagenfurt, the regionīs capital. In this blooming museum with app. 1.2 hectare (3 acres) surface you can walk through the colorful and fascinating world of Carinthia and itīs neighbouring regions. The highlights are among other things the large preservation culture of Carinthiaīs regional flower, the Wulfenia carinthiaca, then the fern and moss gorge, the rocky scenery of the Alpinum and the jungle trees with a show of petrified plants. In the greenhouses rare orchids and bromelias, cactuses and other succulents from all over the world are displayed. Collections of dahlias, fuchsias and fragrant pelargonia suggest the long way from the original wild forms to the selectively-bred, cultivated sorts. There is also a substantial number of medicinal plants, spices and other important useful plants as well as rare woods. The herbarium includes app. 200.000 prepared examples from all plant groups and collections of pollen, seed, fruits, cones, fossils and ethnobotanic objects. It serves mainly for the scientific research and dokumentation.
