The ILRMS has one of the most diverse collections of narrow-gauge railway rolling stock in Australia. The museum is located at 48A Tongarra Road Albion Park(adjacent to the Illawarra Regional Airport), about 90km south of Sydney. The collection has exhibits from the coal, sugar, quarrying, and metal processing industries. A significant part of the collection is units that operated in the local Illawarra region of NSW (near Wollongong). Other major units are from the sugar industry in Queensland.
The museum operates a 2'(610mm) gauge railway on its site. Regular steaming days are held on the second Sunday of each month, as well as the Sundays of major public holidays in NSW. On days when a total fire-ban is proclaimed, the steam locomotives operating the passenger service are replaced by diesel locomotives. Picnic, light refreshments and toilet facilities are available on site.
The museum is also open for inspection with its equipment on static display on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Train rides may be available, but cannot be guaranteed, because of maintenance activites.
As at 2003, the museum has 4 operational steam locomotives and six operational internal-combustion locomotives. The trains and grounds are available for charter. Please contact the Museum directly for details.
