THE DENTIST DAY

The decree nbr 9311, from October 25, 1884, sealed by the Emperor D. Pedro II, created some courses aside Rio de Janeiro and Bahia Medicine University ruled by new statutes. Among them there was the one on Dentistry.
That was the moment when a professional was born prepare don some other concepts more than practice, as it was common at that time, a job performed by skilfull barbers and bleeders.
Jean Baptiste Debret, the documentary French man, has registered this fact on one of its classical drawings.
From Tiradentes to Mário de Araújo, a long path was covered with sacrifice, gathering knowledge from French, American and German dentists who arrived here at the end of 1800.
October 25 was chosen to the date in Brazil to celebrate a professional which is nowadays completely involved with the Brazilian medical care.
The treatment details, sometimes, colide with the social medicine concepts which usually forget that the mouth is part of the body.
The date is also a good reason to celebrate a worker who gathers his art and ability to the anatomic-functional restore procedures of one of the most important systems in the body : the mouth.

EDITIONS FROM CASA DE RUI BARBOSA

The Memory of a Garden (in portuguese Memória de um Jardim), is a publication that bellongs to the museum collection of Casa de Rui Barbosa Museum, is the 6th work which analyses pieces of the collection of that museum.
At this moment, it is the garden shown by Claudia Barbosa Reis in beautiful pictures, a córner which hás become famous by its beauty to which Rui hás dedicated a special attention. He himself was in charge of the cutting of fried branches, fertilizing flower-beds, revolving the land, watering. He also has cultivated roses and gathered plenty of them.
The book shows pictures in which he cherished the flowers and took some rest on a bench.
Claudia Reis also shows the garden as a member of an ecosystem to which the public has access.
The last pages describe the collection inventory related to the garden, including Rui Barbosa’s herm (i.e. statue of a head), on white marble, a work of Rodolfo Pinto do Couto, the unique piece of art to which Rui sat on 1918.

THE CEMETERIES CULTURAL VIEWS
Vera Lúcia Dias

The cemeteries are to many people lugubrious places, related to mourning and surrounded by mysteries. Apart from this image, these places, mainly the old ones, are full of rich surprises to those who dare to visit them. Some of them like Consolação, Araçá e Morumbi, in São Paulo, are true art galleries at the open space where it is possible to find pieces and sculptures of famous artists such as Victor Brecheret, Luigi Brizzolara, Rodolfo Bernardelli, among others.
The Consolação cemetery is the first public cemetery from the imperial period built in São Paulo city. There are three aspects to be noticed : art, famous people and the symbology, apart from the inscriptions over the epitaphs. It was opened on 1854 and there it can be found the tombs of president Washington Luís, of the Count Matarazzo, and also artists such as Monteiro Lobato, Tarsila do Amaral, Mário de Andrade and Oswaldo de Andrade. Other facts that enrich the cemetery art are the Marquesa de Santos’ grave and the work called “The Burial” from Victor Brecheret, that ornates the garve of Ms. Olívia Guedes Penteado, a maecenas.
