VILLA-LOBOS - 120 BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

Heitor Villa-Lobos, a Brazilian musician composer, has born in Rio de Janeiro on March 5, 1887 and has died on the same city on November 17, 1959. He has learned very early with his father the first music notes and theory, as well as how to play clarinet and cello. At the age of 13 he was already a frequent participant of serenades, following several serenade players of that time. Thus he learned how to play guitar as a virtuous. For this specific instrument, hewould write years later some studies, preludes and a concert, dedicated to Segovia. More than “serestas” and “choros” (Brazilian kind of music), he has enhanced his popular musical contact through the relationship with Ernesto Nazareth, whose masterpieces he was the first one to notice its real importance.
On 1913, in Rio de Janeiro, he started an amazing production which would increase for 1000 the number of his compositions. On several of these of this period one may notice the influence of Claude Debussy. On 1922 his participation was also distinguished on the Modern Art Week in São Paulo. His work recognition was also shown through the ordering of his musical pieces.
On 1927 he was in Paris. As he faces the Old World culture, Villa-Lobos has the basic elements of his art defined : the first one is the folklore After that, his sensibility to the foreign music languages is also noticed not only towards Debussy. At this first impact while in Paris, he also had the opportunity to show his knowledge of the Strawinsky’s language and also his permanent Brazilian way.
His music has gathered all the ancient elements such as Indians, black and white men in a real mix of styles throughout his concerts, symphonies, musical poems, chamber music, oratories, guitar, piano and wind instruments compositions.
