The International Art Biennial of Vila Nova de Cerveira, here it is…
A commitment assumed in 1978 to promote the Plastic Arts and its
new values, the Biennial of Cerveira is today a reference, a granted
value of our artistic and cultural panorama, which clearly overcomes
our frontiers.
In the European Year of Innovation and Creativity, the happening of this
event renews our bet on an initiative that is distinguished by its excellence
and is a promoting feature of the cultural tourism, with quality, so necessary
for our socio-economic development, at a local and regional level.
At the same time, the Biennial of Cerveira is a constant concern.
And I do not admit it only due to the difficulties that have always existed,
to which we have faced in order to make it every two years…
More than thirty years after its first edition, it manages to surprise; it has
the capacity to reinvent itself and guarantees always fulfilling its role of
authentic “dynamos” of the cultural offer of the Village of the Arts.
Although the organizational model remains the same, the Biennial counts
on “new blood”, with Augusto Canedo who succeeds our friend Henrique
Silva, who in turn did so much, during the last seven editions, by keeping
himself at the head of the Organization.
We all are aware of the challenges and the responsibilities.
The creation and the recognition of the public interest of the Foundation
of the Biennial do not guarantee per se the conditions of consistency of
this project. Although it is an extra credit that will enhance more and new
opportunities, the truth is that only with the commitment, work and affection
of the artists and the Organization it is possible, as in the past and
present, to cater for the continuity and the development of the International
Art Biennial of Vila Nova de Cerveira.
Because the Biennial cannot nor should depend only upon the good-will
of the “powers”, no matter which these are…
But because to discuss, to provoke polemic, constitutes the genetic mark of
the International Art Biennial of Vila Nova de Cerveira, and evident proof of
its healthy irreverence, we have all the guarantees as for its Future.

AC- The XV Biennial of Cerveira carries on with the model implemented since 1978, by the Painter Jaime Isidoro, and developed since the VII edition (in 1995), under the direction of Henrique Silva, completing a cycle of 30 years…

HS- Thirty years of scattered identities where the inquiring is more evident than the affirmation. In the compulsive period after the 25th of April 1974, the desire for confirmation was mistaken for the need to instill polemic in the values taken for granted until then.

AC – That is better understood within a framework of decentralization of culture and at the same time by bestowing an international dimension to the event, as well as by seeking to contribute to the affirmation of the youngest generation of artists.


HS- The will to decentralize is more the result of the populations and the creators’ aspiration for knowledge than of the central power. The Biennial is an auto-generational phenomenon.

AC- The theme that you suggest for Debate – “The Culture of the Power or the Power of the Culture” – is connected to this issue…

HS- It is a problem subsequent to a centralized system, where a State that should bear the function of assuring the poignancy of local forces, at a social and at a economic and cultural level, overcomes the creators. Thus, it becomes itself the editor of the notions of cultural development, as if we were retarded...

AC- At last, this year, the Art Biennial of Cerveira Foundation will finally be established, a foundation to which your commitment, and that of the City Hall President, was fundamental. It is hoped that in the future it might guarantee better financial conditions to the Biennial’s organization, so as to achieve in due time the ambitioned program for such an important event, and to meet the ever renewed specific demands of the world of art.
We cannot forget that, even though we’ve had the unconditional support of the city hall and the sponsors, it is still with great effort that one has managed to keep up with this project, dreamed 30 years ago, but marked by many difficulties from its very beginning. When we are asked to reveal the recipe for its survival, we could say that often it was that of the “omelet without eggs”… and that of the generosity of the artists and curators, as well as that of an autarchic who also assumes this purpose for 20 years now!

HS- The great capacity of the creators, is undoubtedly, to continue to dream of a new world. This new world is called Foundation; it is the mirage that brings us back alive to defend the maintenance of an identity project born with Jaime, and carried on by so many and excellent artist who have given their best, sustained by José Carpinteira, and to declare that “we also know how to think”.

AC- The Biennial of Cerveira is heir of a historical past, which makes it a remarkable reference in the art panorama in Portugal. It was important to have been kept this identifiable trait: the presentation of the most recent projects, of Portuguese and other artists, valued this year by the curators’ proposals. Through the invitation of emergent and renowned artists, besides creating the opportunity for those who intend to present their work, at an event of great public visibility, through the participation at the international conquest. This year, the Homage distinguishes the artist path of the Sculptor Jorge Vieira…

HS- If anything can serve as evidence of vitality and innovation, as it has been the case over the last thirty, it is the courage to astonish and defend non-catalogued values, as proves the selection Augusto Canedo did, not only in the model he presents, but also in the support to artists, still unknown to the great public, and yet deceased, whose work is a milestone of Portuguese identity. AC- By keeping to host the great majority of the participating artists, catering for their stay, the use of ateliers and workplaces, and also granting them all the possibility to participate at several workshops, conferences and debates, Vila Nova de Cerveira, will continue to be the meeting spot of contemporary art and its audience, as its creator so much esteemed, and who, for the first time, will not participate at this celebration…


HS- Ever since Jaime Isidoro has passed me on the testimony in 1995, with the wisdom that was exceptional in him and with the (constructive) polemic that aroused the difference of options that I’ve adopted, this testimony, which I pass on to Augusto Canedo, hopefully will arouse the same polemic, which is, undoubtedly, what warrants us the desire to do better every time.
