AIZOACEAE
Lithops, the "LIVING STONES"

Most members of the Aizoaceae or midday-flowers occur in Southern Africa, where they occur with many genera and a huge variety in body shape and flowers. They are leaf succulents of which some reach very extreme adaptations to special habitats like the living stones: Their bodies are restricted to a highly succulent single pair of leafs, in habitat deeply sunken into the surrounding soil, making them almost indistinguishable from stone pebbles. As the name midday-flower suggests, many of them are only fully open during a sunny day.
