Coventry is widely regarded as the birthplace of the British motor industry and over 135 motor manufacturers have operated within the City. The original collection had been held by Coventry City Council for a number of years but in 1980 it was decided to open a Museum devoted to the City's transport industries.
The Museum is now one of only 50 Museums that have been officially designated by the government as holding collections of national importance.
