Hans Erni (*1909) is Switzerland's best known and most popular artist. His first national breakthrough came with his monumental painting Die Schweiz, das Ferienland der Völker [Switzerland, Holiday Land of Nations] for the 1939 national exhibition. From his early work dedicated to the abstract to his subsequent realist compositions that underscored his socio-critical and enlightened commitment, Hans Erni has become one of the 20th century's most significant artists.
