First Fire-Proof Building
Detail of the cast iron frame structure

Belper North Mill is the first major fire-proof building by William Strutt (1804) following his earlier experimental mills in Derby. It has an all cast iron frame construction with brick arches springing from great deep beam. The picture shows the details at one corner of the frame of the building.
