Merriment, Mummery and Misrule
Colonial Holidays

A Special Exhibit --- 22 November 2003 - 15 January 2004 --- American winter holidays today are more characterized by Mistletoe, Menorahs and the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade than the Merriment, Mummery and Misrule of our colonial ancestors. In colonial America, the Winter Solstice marked the beginning of a season of raucous revelry for many, pious reflection for a few, and plenty to eat for almost everyone. Join us each Holiday Season for the latest version of this special exhibit.
