A Greek Drinking Cup
Tondo of an Athenian goblet, c. 490-480 BC.
Youth serving wine. Detail from the interior of a drinking cup (kylix), showing a nude boy drawing wine from a large mixing bowl (krater). The scene is taking place during a symposion, a drinking party. The inscription round the illustration reads: 'Lysis (a boy's name) is handsome', a usual way of praising a young man's looks in ancient Athens.
