How to find Fort Hays

There are two major roads through Hays that will lead you to Fort Hays State Historic Site. Traveling across Kansas on Interstate 70 from either direction, it is easiest to get off on exit 157 and travel south on 183 Bypass 4 miles to Fort Hays. Traveling north on US Highway 183, stop at the flashing red light located at the intersection of 183 and Highway 40 (183 Bypass). Turn left (west) and go 1 1/4 miles to Fort Hays. Traveling south on US Highway 183, proceed through the town on Hays (183 is known as Vine Street in the city of Hays) until you reach the intersection of 183 and Highway 40 (at the flashing red light).
