A Hawke Cross-compound Steam Engine
Manufactured by the Kapunda Hawke Engineering Company

This engine provided the power to drive the lineshaft in a Port Adelaide Timber Mill prior to the advent of electric motors. Drive to the lineshaft was by multiple rope belts. It was manufactured here in Kapunda by the Hawke Engineering Company, which operated for 126 years, before finally closing in 1983. This engine is displayed along with material relevant to that company in our "Hawke" Gallery. There is also a short video detailing the history of the company, copies of which are available for sale.
