BUTTER SLICING MACHINE
Butter slicing machine

The butter slicing machine is from The Upper Wallamba Butter Factory which was situated at Dyers Crossing. The butter factory was formed in 1904 and its production averaged one tone of butter per week and by the 1920s the output had risen to four ton per week, with cream being supplied by 220 farmers in the Wallamba farming district. The company was one of the first on the Mid North Coast to install a pasteurising plant. The butter was transferred by boat to the loading wharves at Tuncurry or Forster and then sent to Sydney by ship. The butter won many prizes at the Sydney Agricultural Show. The names of the first Directors of the Dyers Crossing Co-op are interesting as they are names if families still living in the district. They include Messrs. Lynch, Holstein, Newell, Weller, Wright, Deer and Paff. The butter was placed into the wooden box in a large block, then as the butter was pushed through the front grill, it was sliced into smaller blocks by a piece of thin wire attached to a handle.
