WOODEN HELM
Wooden helm from a log punt

The helm from the log punt "Saint Olive" was donated to the Historical Society in 1998 by Mr Stan Smith who was the last owner of Porter's Mill at Tuncurry. The "Saint Olive" manned by Bert Cook, Amos Loving and Jack Mayers, was used to recover fittings and timber from the wreck of "The Jap". 'The Jap" was a three masted barquentine built by Breckenridges at Failford. It was launched on 15 July 1905. it was towed down the Wallamba River, over the bar and then down to Sydney where it was fitted out. "The Jap" was assigned to supply the lucrative hardwood trade with New Zealand and for quite a while it held the sailing record from Auckland to Sydney fully loaded in 9 days. "The Jap" was later returned to Failford where she was converted to steam and fitted with 2 boilers, condensers, fuel tanks, water tanks and twin 45hp steam engines. She was fitted out with a series of passenger cabins and saloon space was also added on the deck. "The Jap" was wrecked on the bar at Cape Hawke Harbour on 3 April 1934.
