MODEL OF CAR FERRY
Model of car ferry used on Wallis Lake

In 1923 Charlie Blows constructed the first vehicular ferry. The ferry carried 2 small cars. Over the years Mr Blows, Mr Fred Parsons, Mr W Gregory and Mr Cook ran the ferry. The punts became bigger to meet the increasing deman until the bridge was opened on 18 July 1959. Catching the ferry could be quite a worry, especially in holiday time when long queques caused long waits. At night a close watch on the time was needed to make sur the last ferry wasn't missed. In 1954 Mr Blows wrapped the anchor chain around the metal bolt on shore and beckoned a large red truck laden with timber aboard. The front wheels ran down on the apron, the ferry bucked and the chain began to unravel. The truck driver saw what was happening and applied the brakes hard. The ferry shot out into the channel, the truck's front wheel rolled off the apron and the whole truck sank, leaving nothing but a hat slowly revolving in the eddie. Shortly up came a head spluttering an unprintable tirade, a sodden body and sundry bits of timber.
