Following Anikeev's participation in the Great Patriotic War, his studies began in 1946 at the Art college in Kishinev, graduating with honors. Moving to Moscow in 1950, he entered the Surikow Institute under the instruction of Malkov, Korolyev and Pokarzhevski.
A fourth-year student in 1954, Anikeev traveled to Kazakhstan and created a number of pictures devoted to the cultivation of the Virgin Lnads. Several of these pictures are now in museums in Tselinograd, Alma-Ata and Kokchetav.
