From 1800 to documenta art
The New Gallery has exhibited modern artworks from the collections of the state of Hesse and the city of Kassel since 1976. To mark the opening of the museum, the famous German artist Joseph Beuys created a room dedicated to his own works. It is still the museum´s centrepiece.
On its 3,600 square metres of exhibition space, visitors can experience a wide diversity of paintings, sculptures and the new media that represent the latest chapter in art history – from the landscape paintings of the 19th century to abstract paintings and international contemporary art.
A particular highlight is the permanent exhibition "about: documenta", where you can immerse yourself in the history of the world-famous art exhibition. Here, the museum also displays original works from past documenta exhibitions such as four chairs from Ai Weiwei´s art project "Fairytale".
