Description [EN]
With 800 years of tradition, 1,000 ore veins, and active research mining, the Freiberg Silver Mine is not a museum but part of the research and teaching mine of the TU Bergakademie. The Freiberg vein deposit, one of the most important in Saxony, was the basis for the development of mining and metallurgy in the Ore Mountains. The “underground Freiberg” covers an area of 5 x 6 km. Over the course of many centuries, around 5,400 tons of silver have been mined in the entire district. This makes Freiberg Germany´s silver city.
Various underground tours offer you the opportunity to discover a gem of Freiberg´s mining history. As part of the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, the mining facilities of the Alte Elisabeth and Reiche Zeche have also been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ore Mountains/Krusnohori since 2019. Experience exciting insights into the history of mining and the working life of the miners who laid the foundation for the prosperity and technical progress of an entire region.
Please note: Due to construction work on the Alte Elisabeth shaft, no entry will be possible there throughout 2026.
