Description [EN]

The German Horse Museum’s varied exhibition shows the importance the horse has had for humans over the centuries. As the most important helper in agriculture, transport, mining and war, it was for generations a close, indispensable partner and had a major influence on social development. In the middle of horse country Lower Saxony, in the special atmosphere of a former cavalry barracks, we invite young and old, horse lovers and those who are about to become one, to an entertaining discovery tour across 1,600 m² of exhibition space.

Your museum journey begins with the fox-sized early horse from 55 million years ago, takes you to the Ukrainian steppe where horses were already kept as domestic animals in 3,500 BC, passes the chariots of antiquity and accompanies you on to medieval knightly tournaments. You will encounter the “Bamberg Rider” and learn what advantages horse collars (kummets) and bog shoes had for agricultural horse teams, how the pit pony came into the mine, and which tricks were used in the horse trade. You will meet important horse experts as well as successful figures from equestrian sport and find out why Verden in particular has made an international name for itself in the horse world. The museum education program conveys horse-related subjects in a vivid, humorous and informative way. Changing programmes offer activities for young and old: for example, how about a birthday party for primary-school children, a time-travel experience for school classes into the world of knights, a research tour for seniors, or a carriage ride for families to a local biotope in Verden? The Hippological Library The German Horse Museum also includes an extensive photo archive and the hippological museum library. It comprises more than 20,000 titles from the early 16th century to the present. The library is frequently used for research projects, but also for private research. Modern books on horses and riding are accessible and can be borrowed through the adjacent municipal library. News Special exhibitions, guided tours, expert lectures, regular museum-education programmes and numerous other events are very popular with a wide audience. Awards In 2026 the German Horse Museum was once again awarded the Museum Quality Seal of Lower Saxony and Bremen.
