Description [EN]
The Rottweil Dominican Museum was opened in 1992 as a branch museum of the Württemberg State Museum Stuttgart with an exhibition area of around 1400m² and is divided into three sections.
The section "Roman Rottweil - Arae Flaviae" is a branch museum of the Archaeological State Museum of Baden-Württemberg. In addition to numerous artifacts, the Orpheus mosaic is a notable feature. A wooden writing tablet mentioning the city as a municipium from the year 186 AD identifies Rottweil as the oldest city in the state. The permanent exhibition was redesigned and reopened in July 2011.
The "sacred art of the Middle Ages - Dursch collection" is a branch museum of the Landesmuseum Württemberg and includes around 180 wooden sculptures and panel paintings by Swabian sculptors of the late Gothic period, featuring outstanding art objects. The collection from Dean Dr. Martin Dursch, who was active in Rottweil from 1851-1881, was acquired by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and gifted to the city of Rottweil.
In the "art space Rottweil - museum of the present," changing exhibitions of contemporary art are displayed. The area, renovated in 2009, is a vibrant platform for contemporary art thanks to a cooperation between the city of Rottweil, the district, the city savings bank, and the art forum. Two to three exhibitions are shown per year.
