Description [EN]
From a cultural-historical perspective, Neuzelle Monastery is an exceptional phenomenon. Today, it is one of the few completely preserved monastic complexes in Europe. In particular, the almost fully preserved Holy Sepulcher in the form of a Baroque stage theater is an outstanding Passion representation of the Counter-Reformation. The Holy Sepulcher of Neuzelle consists of painted canvases and wooden panels up to six meters high. The almost life-sized figures and figure groups are painted with glue paint on wood. Of the approximately 240 large-format panels and canvases, 220 have been preserved. The Neuzelle Holy Sepulcher theatrically utilizes the means and possibilities of Baroque staging and is also a technical masterpiece – an artistic and spiritual treasure: A heavenly theater! After extensive restoration measures, you can currently experience the scene "Prayer at the Mount of Olives" (set design Garden) and the "Scourging of Jesus" in the set design Palace Courtyard in an underground museum building under optimal conservation conditions. An introductory exhibition in the carriage house building provides explanations for a cultural and religious historical context. The Museum Heavenly Theater – The Neuzelle Passion Representations of the Holy Sepulcher was opened in March 2015 and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Opening hours: April to September Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10 am - 6 pm | October to March Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays 10 am - 4 pm. Closed from 24.12. - 26.12. and 31.12. - 01.01. The "Combination Ticket" also allows you to visit the late Gothic cloister with a museum exhibition on the history of the monastery. The Neuzelle Abbey Foundation restores, maintains, and preserves the listed monastic complex in Neuzelle. It operates and promotes institutions and events that serve culture, science, and education. We thank all supporters and their staff, and we particularly thank the following institutions: East German Savings Bank Foundation with the Sparkasse Oder-Spree; Cultural Foundation of the Federal States with the Friends of the Cultural Foundation; State of Brandenburg, Ministry of Science, Research, and Culture (MWFK); The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
