Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz

The Art Collections Chemnitz at Theaterplatz were established in 1909 under Richard Möbius. The first exhibition in the new museum building, featuring about 500 artworks, included the participation of Expressionist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, whose works today form the core of the museum. The museum houses 70,000 objects from the 16th to the 21st century in various departments. The painting collection includes numerous works by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Lovis Corinth, Edvard Munch, and Georg Baselitz. The sculpture collection features works by Edgar Degas, Aristide Maillol, Georg Kolbe, and Tony Cragg, among others. The graphic collection holds approximately 28,000 works on paper, with outstanding holdings including the collections of Lyonel Feininger, Honoré Daumier, and Wolfgang Mattheuer. The museum also includes the Textile and Decorative Arts Collection with Coptic textiles and one of the largest collections of stockings from around 1900, the Carlfriedrich Claus-Archiv Foundation with the entire estate of the artist, and the art library comprising over 70,000 volumes.

Guided tours and group offers

Öffentliche Führungen finden immer samstags von 16:00-16:45 und sonntags von 14:30-15:15 statt. Die Teilnahme an öffentlichen Führungen ist im Museumseintrittenthalten; um Anmeldung wird gebeten: info-kunstsammlungen@stadt-chemnitz.de.
