Description [EN]
The regional history museum is located in one of the oldest buildings in the Hanseatic city, the Steintor. The floors of the medieval gate present evidence of the history of the Hanseatic city and life on the Peene River. The fifth floor offers a panoramic view of the Peenetal Nature Park and the river, which is often referred to as the Amazon of the North.
A special highlight of the exhibition is the sensational "Anklam coin treasure", which should actually be better called a "treasure trove". It not only includes 2,579 coins, but also a number of silver and gold jewelry and everyday objects such as clothing appliqués and pendants for guild cups. There is speculation about the story of its deposit during the Thirty Years´ War and its mysterious 400-year stay in the remains of a cellar wall.
