Description [EN]
In the heart of Langenargen, opposite the late Baroque parish church of St. Martin and the attached Hospital of the Holy Spirit, the former parsonage now houses the Museum Langenargen — today an internationally renowned gem on Lake Constance. The collection includes artworks and testimonies from Langenargen´s more than 1250-year history and the closely connected history of the County of Montfort.
The exhibits include outstanding paintings, sculptures, graphics, as well as coins and medals from the Middle Ages to the present, whose creators have a special connection to the Lake Constance region and Langenargen. Art from the 20th century forms a main focus, which is currently being expanded to include contemporary positions. These include prestigious collections from Hans Purrmann and Mathilde Vollmoeller-Purrmann, as well as Jan Balet. Also represented with significant works are painters Maria Caspar-Filser, Karl Caspar, Felicitas Köster-Caspar, André Ficus, and Julius Herburger, as well as sculptors Hilde Broër and Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen. Recently, the collection also includes works from three local artists from Langenargen—Inge Kracht, Dietlinde Stengelin, and Annette Weber.
A main attraction is the annually changing special exhibitions, which make a visit especially interesting and valuable. In the 2025 season, we present a major exhibition on the theme "Paths of Abstraction" with impressive works by Hilde Broër and Otto Valentien. Complementing this are three smaller exhibitions with paintings by Dietlinde Stengelin for her 85th birthday, and by Hanspeter Münch and Ernst Schumacher, both of whom are brought into exciting artistic dialogues with Hans Purrmann.
