Description [EN]
The Riedmuseum is Rastatt´s contribution to the cross-border PAMINA-Rheinpark, a museum route featuring eight museums, a cross-border nature conservation center, and numerous stops along the way. The museum is located in the center of the Ottersdorf district and documents in two areas:
The Museum in the Barn is dedicated to the Rhine correction by Johann Gottfried Tulla and his successors. It provides an overview of the technical, cultural-historical, and ecological aspects to illustrate the changes in the Rhine floodplain landscape around the Ried villages of Plittersdorf, Ottersdorf, and Wintersdorf. A functional model that can be flooded illustrates the comparison between the regulated Rhine and the primeval riverbed during floods.
The Residential House at Kirchplatz 6 with a courtyard and oil mill dates back to the mid-18th century. Designed as an open-air museum area within the Riedmuseum grounds, it represents a typical rural homestead in the Ried. The residential house itself, which has been open to the public since fall 2001, has been furnished on the ground floor with the original furniture of the last resident and exemplarily documents an authentic living situation in this region. The upper floor of the house features an exhibition on topics of village life, such as clothing, popular piety, wall pictures, and memorial signs. In many places in the house, visitors can look beneath the surface using so-called time windows, thus offering a glimpse back into the house´s 250-year-long history. In the restored oil mill, the individual steps of edible oil production can be traced.
The Riedmuseum also includes the Eel Schooner Heini, which was acquired as a floating exhibit in 1991. It is a ship specially designed for eel fishing, located in an old Rhine arm in the Wintersdorf district, and can be visited as a stop on the PAMINA-Rheinpark bicycle path on special dates (weather permitting).
