ON VIEW: Role models with two faces: superheroes from the DC and Marvel universes
July 21 to September 28, 2025
Extraordinary abilities, secret identities and mysterious backstories: Characteristics that fictional characters such as Spiderman, Wonderwoman or Batman have in common. For more than 80 years now, the internationally renowned comic publishers DC and Marvel have been creating fantastic (anti-)hero and heroine characters who, embedded in seemingly endlessly growing universes, fight not only against evil but also against their own demons. A special look is taken at the comic classic WATCHMEN by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, which critically examines the responsibility of superheroes and deconstructs the myth like no other work.
The town gallery in Altötting is housed in a time-honored building dating back to 1905, where a “mission exhibition” of the Bavarian Capuchins was on display until the 1970s - with ethnological and zoological exhibits from the order´s mission area with the Mapuche Indians in Chile. For more than twenty years now, the town of Altötting has been hosting changing exhibitions of fine art in the rooms on Pope Benedikt-Platz that have attracted national attention.
