Description [EN]
Situated on the site of the former Dominican monastery, the Pirna CityMuseum is one of the oldest in the Free State of Saxony and was founded in 1861 by the local trade association. From 1878, the Gebirgsverein für die Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland Tourist Association) also established museum collections on natural history, folklore and local history. The two collections were later merged and the exhibitions have been housed in the monastery´s chapter house since 1923. After a long period of restoration, the museum was reopened in 1993. The new exhibitions are dedicated to the Elbe sandstone and the history of the town. In addition, a remnant of the building, part of which dates back to the time of the monastery, was converted into the museum´s entrance building. The architectural solution, which combines old masonry with modern facilities, was awarded a prize by the Federal Ministry of Building in a competition. The Pirna CityMuseum is a place of historical research and education. It collects and preserves evidence and information about life in the town and the region. The horizon of observation extends from the present back to the time of early settlement. Selected findings of modern historiography are brought to life for the general public through exhibitions and publications. An extensive media library is available for study purposes. In this sense, the Pirna CityMuseum is an integral part of the Dresden cultural area.
