SCHUSSENRIEDER Experience Brewery with Germany’s First Beer Stein Museum

Located directly on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, it offers an attractive excursion destination for the whole family: the SCHUSSENRIEDER Experience Brewery with Germany’s first Beer Stein Museum, the only museum of its kind worldwide.
Under the motto “Drinking culture from five centuries,” since 1994 some 1,200 beer steins from the years 1550 to 1925—mostly from the private collection of brewery senior boss Jürgen Josef Ott—have invited visitors on an exciting journey through the history of beer.
Among the extraordinary collector’s items is one of the largest hand‑carved wooden beer steins in the world, made from a 250‑year‑old oak beam. At 1.80 meters tall, with a capacity of 110 liters and a weight of 68 kilograms, it gets beer fans’ hearts racing. The materials of the steins range from silver, porcelain, ebony, ivory, marble, crystal and glass to exotic materials like coconut shells. These exhibits were brought to Germany by world travelers from very different countries.
To date, more than a million interested guests from around the world have visited the Beer Stein Museum, which has since become a major tourist draw well beyond the region.
The beer stein was once both an investment and a status symbol and enjoyed a long tradition for centuries. It’s no wonder the antique collector’s pieces surpass one another in originality and individuality. The beer‑stein culture only came to an end in 1925, when machine production began and steins became affordable for everyone.
Anyone who wants to deepen their knowledge of the history of these historic drinking vessels can join one of the exciting guided tours.
After exploring traditional drinking culture, the shady beer garden in the brewery courtyard, a cool 17th‑century vaulted cellar or the historic Brotzeitstube (traditional snack room) invite visitors to enjoy Swabian delicacies and fine contemporary beer specialties. In a baroque atmosphere the servers of the SCHUSSENRIEDER brewery serve the unfiltered museum beer Original No. 1 and accompany it with Swabian treats. Another attraction in the brewery is the third‑largest rock crystal in the world. The colossus, weighing over one ton, was donated by brewer Jürgen Josef Ott on the occasion of the presentation of the crystal wheat beer.
The guild tree inaugurated in 2007, which stands in the SCHUSSENRIEDER brewery courtyard, is also one of the region’s sights with its historic inn signs.
