In the Komponistenquartier Hamburg, close to the St.-Michaelis-Kirche ("Michel") as well as the Landungsbrücken, the Reeperbahn and the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte, the Brahms-Museum Hamburg is located at Peterstraße 39. It presents the life and work of the composer Johannes Brahms and serves as a place of remembrance and research.
The museum was established in 1971 and is housed in a listed merchant’s house dating from 1751. The exhibited holdings provide a compact overview of Brahms’s biography and his musical output (1833–1897) through photographs, objects and written records such as concert programmes, letters, musical manuscripts and other documents.
The museum’s facilities include an extensive reference library available to visitors for study purposes. This collection also contains an original square piano from 1859 on which Brahms himself played and taught.
The museum is operated by the Johannes-Brahms-Gesellschaft, founded in 1969, which preserves the memory of Johannes Brahms and promotes national and international Brahms research.
