Description [EN]
In Soest’s historic centre the Burghof occupies a prominent position; the patrician house accommodates the Burghof municipal history museum and a historic banquet hall. Directly adjacent stands the Romanische Haus of 1180, a nearly original, tower-like residential building and the oldest surviving dwelling between the Rhine and the Weser.
The origin of the name “Burghof” has not been definitively clarified to this day; there is no evidence of an actual castle in the immediate vicinity, and the nearby street “Auf der Borg” does not provide a clear indication either. The property is situated on the site of a medieval ministerial seat, which is discussed as a possible source of the name. The main building dates from 1559–1560 and was constructed of greensandstone in the Renaissance style. Historically, the Burghof is closely associated with the influential families von Dael and von Fürstenberg; the impressive knights’ hall illustrates the former wealth of these families. Today this hall serves as the venue for the annual Philippsessen and, because of its solemn atmosphere, is also used for civil wedding ceremonies.
Since 1909 the Burghof has housed the city history collection. The exhibits span from the Neolithic to the early 19th century and increasingly emphasise everyday historical aspects. Of particular note is a collected works section of prints relating to the oeuvre of Heinrich Aldegrever. In the museum garden, sculptures by various artists and archaeological finds complement the presentation; there is also a fully preserved air-raid trench from 1943 on display.
