Edelsteinmine Steinkaulenberg

Gemstones, those marvels of nature deep beneath the earth’s surface, where they formed millions of years ago — to be admired in the host rock — are what the gemstone mines of the Steinkaulenberg in Idar-Oberstein offer. The gemstones found here — agate, amethyst, jasper and rock crystal — founded the local jewelry and gemstone industry centuries ago. Today it is the only mine in all of Europe open to visitors. Commercial mining was discontinued in 1875 and the tunnels fell into disrepair. For mineral enthusiasts, a gemstone camp is available for searching for stones. In addition, there is a prospecting area that is restocked daily with minerals from around the world.
