Description [EN]
Gemstones, these masterpieces of nature deep below the Earth´s surface, where they formed millions of years ago - to admire them in their native rock is what the gemstone mines of Steinkaulenberg in Idar-Oberstein offer. The gemstones found here - agate, amethyst, jasper, and rock crystal - laid the foundation of the local jewelry and gemstone industry centuries ago. Today, it is the only mine in all of Europe open for public viewing. Commercial mining ceased in 1875 and the tunnels fell into disrepair. For mineral enthusiasts, the gemstone camp is available for gemstone hunting. Additionally, there is a digging field that is daily restocked with minerals from around the world.
