Baroque Half-Timbered Building
The current museum building was erected in 1767 as a municipal boys´ school. The Latin inscription above the entrance door refers to its use as a school.
HIC LEONES AMANT IVVENESQUE DOCENT
This translates to: Here the lions love their youth and teach them. The lions represent their two walking counterparts in the Duderstadt city coat of arms.
Unique and Regional
Water harp and reff, Hotze and Knütjer - the Museum of the City of Duderstadt presents astonishing things to its visitors. Varied exhibition rooms illustrate the life of people in the city and countryside 150 years ago. The diverse history of the Eichsfeld shaped crafts and economy, as agriculture alone could only feed a few families.
Learn more about quality work from Eichsfeld or cigars made in Duderstadt. Cultured living and historical clothing, church art, and church history complete the glimpse into the past.
Visitors can try things out, try on costumes, play, and craft. Entertaining and interactive, the museum visit becomes an experience for the whole family.
Ground Floor - Archaeology and Special Exhibitions
During renovations in the house, a piece of the old city wall was uncovered under the foundation. Take a look at the excavation and marvel at the recovered finds. In the special exhibition area, diverse exhibitions on cultural history topics take place regularly.
First Floor - Quality from the Eichsfeld - Craftsmanship and Economy
Not only was the Eichsfeld craftsmanship known and in demand beyond the region, but the performances of the traveling musicians were also popular far beyond the borders. The exhibition showcases products like cigars from Duderstadt or fine glacé gloves as well as a handloom or the home setup of a shoemaker.
Second Floor - In the City and Country
How is life in the city and how in the countryside, what did a living room, clothing, or a classroom look like? Here on the second floor, you see everything about it! In a writing workshop, styluses, slate boards, and other writing tools from earlier times can be tried out. Selected objects from churches of the Eichsfeld offer insight into the diverse church history of the region.
Experience. Discover. Try Out.
This is the guiding theme of the museum. It offers all visitors the opportunity to try or understand things across different sections.
Learn a wide variety about regional history, experience rural and urban lifestyles, and try out how heavy a reff is, how a water harp sounds, how it feels to sit on old school benches, or why you should have a good nose.
