In Frankfurt am Main and in Kassel the Bildungsstätte Anne Frank is established as an educational centre; it opened in 1997 and was previously called Jugendbegegnungsstätte Anne Frank. Its programmes are aimed at young people and adults with the goal of raising awareness of antisemitism, racism and other forms of hatred and of strengthening democratic engagement.
The roots of the institution go back to the 1950s, when Anne Frank’s father already expressed the idea of a meeting place. The project became more concrete after the exhibition „Anne aus Frankfurt. Leben und Lebenswelt Anne Franks“ (1991) and the Spurensuche project of 1993/1994; the association was founded in 1994, and the opening took place in 1997 in the former Haus der Jugend near Anne Frank’s former address. In 2003 the Bildungsstätte presented the multimedia exhibition „Anne Frank. Ein Mädchen aus Deutschland“, which was produced in cooperation with the Anne-Frank-Haus (Amsterdam) and the Anne Frank Zentrum (Berlin). In 2013 it was renamed Bildungsstätte Anne Frank; in 2018 the permanent exhibition conceived as a learning laboratory, „Anne Frank. Morgen mehr“, was opened.
In terms of content the Bildungsstätte offers a broad historical-political educational programme: seminars, training and workshops address topics such as right-wing extremism, mediation and civil courage; further training for multipliers, talks with contemporary witnesses and exchange programmes complement the offerings. Together with the Stiftung Erinnerung, Verantwortung, Zukunft (EVZ), the Centre for Research on Antisemitism at TU Berlin and the Pädagogisches Zentrum of the Fritz Bauer Institut and the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, the Bildungsstätte organises the conference series Blickwinkel. Antisemitismuskritisches Forum für Bildung und Wissenschaft. Previously the institution ran two counselling centres for people affected by discrimination and violence (response. and ADiBe), which provided confidential, free and independent local support in Hesse, strengthened resources and promoted networking. Additionally, the Bildungsstätte maintains a YouTube channel focusing on racism and in November 2022 launched the #Gemeinsamgegen Antisemitismus campaign on TikTok to counter antisemitic codes—from conspiracy narratives through historical revisionism to Shoah denial—as well as Israel-related antisemitism.
