Nestled in the parkland of the Münsterland region lies Kulturgut Haus Nottbeck — a modern cultural forum set in a historic setting. Since 2001, the history of this former 14th-century noble residence has been intertwined with the Museum of Westphalian Literature, which tells literary stories in a contemporary way and creates literary worlds.
The permanent exhibition offers an overview of literary eras and figures—from Christian Dietrich Grabbe’s plays and Annette von Droste-Hülshoff’s poetry to children’s and young adult books by Cornelia Funke and the cabaret of Jürgen von Manger; there is hardly a genre that has not been shaped by Westphalian authors. In addition to precious exhibits such as a 15th-century Low German Bible, cross-media installations provide fresh inspiration. Rotating special exhibitions complement the tour with contemporary discourses.
The outstanding cultural program ranges from readings, theater, and cabaret to concerts spanning jazz, pop, and classical music. Writing workshops, literary escape rooms, and children’s movie screenings offer interactive educational experiences, while the historic grounds — with their moats, orchards, and the Kulturcafé — invite visitors to linger.
