Description [EN]

WELCOME TO YOUR PAST!

You are the result of an experiment spanning 3.5 million years.

At MONREPOS, you’ll discover what came of it.

MONREPOS takes you on a long journey back to yourself and your roots in the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic. In the exhibition ‘UnderstandIng HUMANity’, you’ll conduct your own research, discovering, experiencing and interpreting the exhibits for yourself. You won’t find the classic museum warning ‘Please do not touch’ at MONREPOS. This makes the insights you take home about yourself, your ancestors and your contemporaries all the more memorable. The message: curiosity pays off – today, just as it did over 3 million years ago.

MONREPOS is an extracurricular learning centre and, as a location of the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA) , one of eight research museums of the Leibniz Association across Germany. Here, cutting-edge archaeological research, its dissemination and socio-political discourse are inextricably intertwined.

For over 30 years, archaeologists have been working at Monrepos Castle, the former summer residence of the Princely House of Wied. In this historic recreational area, high above the Middle Rhine Valley, between the UNESCO World Heritage Sites ‘Upper Middle Rhine Valley’ and ‘Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes’, there are numerous walking trails, including the Rheinsteig.

At MONREPOS, you can spend many enlightening hours. In between, you can unwind in our cosy café-bistro ‘Heimathirsch’ and enjoy the view over the Middle Rhine Valley from the sun terrace.
