Museo di Leventina

In the Leventina Valley near Giornico, the Museo di Leventina offers insights into the valley’s cultural heritage. The house, also known as Casa Stanga, is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the region’s cultural assets in collaboration with the Canton of Ticino.

Founded in 1966, the museum moved into the historic Casa Stanga complex in 1972. It is operated by the Verein Museum Leventina, founded in 1967; the museum is also a member of the Associazione musei etnografici ticinesi. The building itself dates back to the patrician Stanga family and was originally erected as an inn in the 16th century; restorations were carried out in the 1930s and 1970s.

The exhibition presents objects related to sacred art and popular religiosity as well as everyday implements from domestic life and crafts. The collection also includes material documenting the region’s transport history. An archive of documents and photographs complements the holdings; this includes the archive of the poet Alina Borioli. The façade features 16th‑century frescoes by Domenico Caresana and Giovanni Battista Tarilli, as well as a Madonna and Child by Tita Pozzi from the 1930s.

The Museo di Leventina acts as a guardian of the region’s memory culture and as a point of contact for research and interpretation of the history of the Valle Leventina.
