Description [EN]
The Breisach City Museum is located in the beautiful Rheintor (Rhine Gate), a historic baroque building designed by the famous French architect Vauban for Louis XIV.
Visitors can discover 4,000 years of Breisach’s history in one place. The museum shows fascinating objects from archaeology, art, and everyday life, from the Bronze Age to modern times, on an exhibition area of about 400 square meters.
Highlights include the Celtic hilltop settlement on the Münsterberg, the Roman period, the Middle Ages, the impressive St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the time when Breisach was one of the largest and most modern fortresses in the world in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The museum also offers temporary exhibitions and guided tours on request.
In summer, guests can relax on the outdoor terrace by the pond, enjoy a drink or a snack at the museum café, and experience the special atmosphere of this historic place.
