Museum Neukirchen-Vluyn

In the townscape of Neukirchen-Vluyn, Museum Neukirchen-Vluyn focuses on the local history of the town; it is located in the Vluyn district at Pastoratstraße 1. Archival material is kept separately at Hans-Böckler-Straße 26.

The collection traces back to holdings of the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Vluyn, which were exhibited from 1976 in the then Kulturhalle. From 1978 the institution used the Kulturhalle as a local history museum. After several years of renovation, the building was reopened in 1989. Between 2016 and 2018, with support from the LVR, the exhibition was re-conceived in terms of content.

The permanent exhibition places the town’s history at its centre and links economic, social and cultural aspects. On view are the presentations „Warenwelt“ and „Textilgeschichte“, and exhibitions on „Handel und Berufe“ as well as „Schulgeschichte“. Technical and economic developments are documented in the section „Mühlen, Transmission und Dampfmaschine“. Social-historical responses to industrialisation are addressed under the theme „Soziales Engagement als Antwort auf die Industrialisierung – Andreas Bräm und der Erziehungsverein“, and „Nationalsozialismus in Neukirchen-Vluyn“ is also thematically examined. The programme is complemented by the „Familienmuseum“, which illuminates everyday life and local living contexts.
