Castle in the Green

Already by its imposing size the castle complex stands out, situated high above the Zwickauer Mulde, in the green heart of the large district town of Glauchau. Where the old Saxon noble family of the Schönburgs once ruled, there is now a lively cultural centre with a regional reach: housed in the buildings around the front castle courtyard are the city and district library "Georgius Agricola", the gallery for contemporary art art gluchowe e. V., and the "Clara Wieck" music school of the Zwickau district. The entire building complex of Hinterglauchau Castle, transformed from a fortified castle into a residential palace at the end of the 15th century, has accommodated the museum—and later the city's art collection—since 1940. Public parking and dining options are located in the immediate vicinity of the castle.

Diverse exhibitions and impressive collections

At the Schloss Museum Glauchau, magnificently furnished living rooms with furniture, applied arts and paintings from the Renaissance to the Gründerzeit, late Gothic and early Renaissance architectural forms, and a variety of exhibition areas come together in one of the oldest museums in Saxony. A true insider tip is the extensive painting collection of the Dresden physician Paul Geipel (1869–1956), which features masterpieces from Romanticism to Impressionism. The exhibition area "Georgius Agricola – From Glauchau to the World" is dedicated to the native of Glauchau and father of mineralogy, Georgius Agricola (1494–1555). A tour through the museum is thus like a voyage of discovery to counts and collectors, to benefactors and scholars, and the castle itself—with its great hall, castle chapel, dungeon, carriage house and underground passages—becomes an impressive experience for art and history lovers, for those seeking relaxation and the curious, as well as for families and children.

Special exhibitions regularly present particular collection items, including from the rich graphics holdings.
