From castle to museum
From castle to museum: Schloss Friedrichstein palace in Bad Wildungen has seen quite a few changes over the past 900 years. It is now home to some impressive exhibitions.
Hesse´s military history collection Sammlung Hessische Militärgeschichte consists of weapons, uniforms, medals and paintings dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Many of these objects were visually impressive status symbols.
The so-called Turcica, or Turkish military objects, are also of major importance: the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel acquired these from the Ottoman Empire, either as spoils of war, or they received them as gifts or purchased them. The star attraction is a richly embellished marquee where audience were granted.
A new permanent exhibition shows some of the palace rooms furnished in the style of the empire. The valuable early 19th century furniture originally came from Schloss Wilhelmshöhe palace and Kassel´s Residenzpalais in Friedrichsplatz square. It is complemented by period clothing, ceramics and paintings.
