Located on the southern shore of the Walchensee, the Walchensee-Museum in Urfeld presents the art, culture and history of the surrounding regions. The house opened on 21 July 2008, the 150th birthday of Lovis Corinth, in the premises of the former "Hotel Post"; the project was initiated by a foundation.
A focal point of the collection is works by Lovis Corinth, who lived intermittently in his residence in Urfeld between 1918 and 1925 and there created the well-known Walchensee paintings. In several exhibition rooms more than 200 graphic works from his estate are currently on display.
The artistic range is complemented by works by other painters active at Walchensee. In addition, the museum documents 250 years of local history for the areas of Kochelsee (including Schlehdorf), Walchensee (including Walchensee and Urfeld), Jachenau, Herzogstand, Kesselberg and the Walchensee hydroelectric power station. From Benediktbeuern Monastery, among other items, the chronicle by Father Karl Meichelbeck from 1750 is exhibited.
The exhibits include chronicles, oil paintings, watercolours and pencil drawings as well as copper, steel and wood engravings. Complementing these are old books, historical collectibles, postcards, building plans, share certificates and emergency currency.
