Wallfahrtsmuseum Wies

In Steingaden in Upper Bavaria, at the pilgrimage site of the Wies, the Wallfahrtsmuseum in der Wies preserves church-historical collections and conveys the local pilgrimage tradition. The museum is part of the Museenverbund Auerbergland.

The rooms are housed in a former priory and pilgrimage hospice that adjoins the pilgrimage church to the east. The building is dated to around 1747 and is recorded as an architectural monument of the municipality of Steingaden.

Since its opening in 1988, the museum has primarily documented the pilgrimage to the Scourged Savior. The presentation is based on historical evidence and handed-down documents of the Brotherhood of the Scourged Savior. Among the valuable objects are the first book of miracles from 1746 and a painting depicting the transfer of the venerated image; this event took place at a time when the Wieskirche was still under construction and only a small chapel existed, which was consecrated on 17 March 1744.

In the main hall a processional figure is placed centrally, with votive paintings at the sides that offer insight into devotional practice and the local history of piety.
