It´s not far from Hamburg´s city center to the green gem in the Norderelbe river: the Kaltehofe Waterworks in the Rothenburgsort district. From here, Hamburg was supplied with clean drinking water for almost 100 years, starting in 1893.
Since 2011, this industrial monument and nature park has invited visitors to experience a piece of modern urban history as well as the diverse natural landscape of the Elbe island. The exhibition in the cube-shaped building focuses on the history of Hamburg´s water supply and the former Kaltehofe waterworks, as well as on the city´s ornamental fountains.
A nature trail leads along the former filter basins through the Waterworks´ landscaped park. The trail consists of various elements that together offer a comprehensive sensory experience. Kaltehofe offers an extensive guided tour program and can be booked as a conference venue. A café on site provides refreshments.
