Museum Wilhelm Morgner

In Soest the Wilhelm-Morgner-Haus has served since May 2016 as an exhibition venue for the Museum Wilhelm Morgner and for the Raum Schroth of the Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst with the Schroth Collection.

The building was constructed in 1962 to a design from Wiesbaden and is a typical example of the early 1960s; it has been registered as an architectural monument by the city of Soest (since 1999) and was honoured in January 2017 by the LWL-Denkmalpflege as Denkmal des Monats in Westfalen-Lippe. In September 2015 the city council decided on the official renaming to "Museum Wilhelm Morgner." Until May 2016 the house remained closed due to renovation and expansion work.

The permanent exhibition is primarily devoted to the Soest-born expressionist Wilhelm Morgner and displays central works from his oeuvre. The collection comprises approximately 60 paintings as well as around 400 graphic works and drawings. In addition, holdings from the municipal art collection are presented, which include three-dimensional works, sculptures, prints and paintings ranging from Westphalian Expressionism and regional landscape painting to the modern period after 1945 and contemporary art.

The municipal collection provides a detailed record of regional art of the 19th and 20th centuries and comprises more than 3,500 works of art by artists who were connected to Soest or exhibited here; among those represented are Heinrich Aldegrever, Christian Rohlfs, Emil Nolde, Otto Modersohn, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Franz Nölken, Johannes Molzahn, Josef Albers, Emil Schumacher, Günther Uecker, Fritz Winter and other significant figures. In addition to the permanent exhibition, rotating solo and group exhibitions are presented. The building also houses an art lending library where works can be borrowed.
