Traditional rural work was not only the economic but also the social foundation of life.
In workshops and on farms, people worked with whatever the land and trade provided—such as leather and wood in shoemaking, regional grains in baking, or flax and wool in weaving. Many crafts still exist today, while others have disappeared, and many new professions have emerged. The growing world population, environmental concerns, globalization, and scientific and technological advances both necessitate and enable constant major changes.
